Located in southwestern Kabul, which was the scene of heavy fighting between 1992 and 1995, many animals bear signs of the long conflict. "Eight years ago in Kabul, different parties were fighting and the zoo was on the front line. One day, a hand grenade was dropped on the lion cage and blinded the lion in one eye and with the other eye he can only see five percent," said zoo keeper Shiragha. The zoo has been neglected during the Taliban rule. The animals are in a terrible state. Rubble is strewn all over and many of the cages are damaged. Many of the animals are wounded. Like the Afghan people, these animals too would be hoping for an end to their misery.
